Microphone Classification

As per the standard, there is not such a thing like a class or type compliant microphone, because there is no "product standard" for measurement microphone.

However we know standards to refer to:

1. The microphone capsule standard IEC 61094-4 for capsule mechanics, and quality

2. The sound level meter standard for tolerance and accuracy IEC 61672-1, sound level meters, specifications

3. The mutimedia standard for microphones IEC60268-4 Sound system equipment, microphones

4. The standard for measurment equipment. IEC61326-1 Electrical equipment for measurment, control and laboratory use, EMC requirements

5. The microphone calibration standard IEC 61094-5 (pressure calibration of working standard microphones)

6. Audio, video, and audiovisual systems, interconnectinmg and matching values (Phantom power section) IEC 61938

If you combine sections of each of those standards in a usefull way you can edit a spec that makes measurement mics comparable.

For mic capsules the product standard IEC 61094-4 is applicable

For the measurement microphone iitself tolerances as per IEC 61672-1 are used to qualify and test the microphone against.

This standard specifies electroacoustic performance requirements for sound level meters, which also apply to microphones used in such instruments.

IEC 61672-1 distinguishes between Class 1 and Class 2 instruments, with Class 1 instruments having higher accuracy requirements, especially at higher frequencies.
